One man is in custody following a fatal shooting and hourslong standoff Saturday morning at a home in Locust Grove, police said.

Officers were called to the 500 block of Hansen Drive about 6:30 a.m., Locust Grove Police Chief Jesse Patton said.

Few details have been released, but police said one man was fatally shot and a woman was badly beaten. The man believed to be responsible was taken into custody about 9 a.m. following a 2 ½ hour standoff with officers.

The woman who was beaten was able to leave the house on her own and is expected to be OK, Patton said.

It’s unclear what prompted the incident or what the relationship was between the three people involved. The name of the man arrested has not been released.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
