Man charged in shooting death of bystander outside Buckhead club

Witnesses described the chaos to Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach.

A man has been charged with the shooting death of an innocent bystander who was hit by gunfire outside a Buckhead club, police said.

Anthony Parkman was taken into custody Sunday and booked into the Fulton County jail, Atlanta police Officer Lisa Bender said in a statement.

He’s charged with murder in the early morning Oct. 5 shooting death of Emeka Onyekwe outside the Buckhead Loft in the 2000 block of Tula Street, Bender said.

Parkman was one of the performers at “open mic” night at the club, police said earlier. He’s also charged with criminal damage to property.

Onyekwe, a regular at the club, was shot in the parking lot, authorities said. Investigators believe the 36-year-old was caught in crossfire when an argument inside the bar spilled outside.

“No one else had a scratch. No one else was injured,” a manager told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution soon after the shooting. “He was just a really nice guy. He definitely had nothing to do with the shooting. He didn’t know them.”

Between 50 and 60 people were inside when a fight broke out, AJC.com previously reported. Those involved were not regular customers.
