Police say an Illinois man working at a convenience store tampered with food by putting bleach in a bottle of barbecue sauce.

The barbecue sauce was for use in the store's sloppy joe sandwiches, according to SaukValley.com, but it appears the tampering was detected by another employee before tainted food could be sold to customers.

Brent A. Gross, 23, was charged with attempted tampering with food, drugs or cosmetics. His preliminary hearing is May 14.

The food tampering incident occurred on Dec. 12; Gross was charged in January for a separate incident involving theft and criminal damage to property.
