Man accused of DUI attempted to shoot officer, cops say

An Austell man remained in jail Monday, two days after he allegedly attempted to shoot a Marietta police officer.

Josiah Moorhous, 25, faces a slew of charges, including aggravated assault, willful obstruction of an officer and driving under the influence of drugs, according to Cobb County jail records.

Marietta police Officer Maria Funes was called to a home in the 300 block of Aviation Road about 6:45 a.m. Saturday regarding two people buying drugs, according to arrest warrants obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“The homeowner reported an unfamiliar vehicle had just parked in their yard and the driver was now stumbling around the area acting suspiciously,” Marietta police said in a Facebook post.

When Funes went to question Moorhous, he led her on a chase, according to the warrant. A second officer, Rocky Ellenson, later arrived at the scene.

At one point, Ellenson heard Funes yell “gun” as she saw Moorhous pulling a weapon from his waist, according to the warrant. Ellenson then tackled Moorhous.

Police searched a white 2013 Ford F-150, belonging to Moorhous, parked in the middle of the yard and found a small bag of what was believed to be cocaine on the driver’s side floorboard.

Authorities believed Moorhous operated the truck under the influence of drugs “based on his demeanor,” according to the warrant.

Moorhous also faces charges of possession of cocaine, possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, receipt, possession or transfer of a firearm by a convicted felon or felony first offender, no proof of insurance and driving with an expired tag.

Marietta police said Moorhous has a history of fighting with law enforcement.
