A man is in jail after Hall County deputies said he defrauded an 84-year-old woman out of more than $70,000 over the course of four years.

Hyun Bae You, 57, of Winder, was arrested Tuesday after a monthlong investigation, Hall sheriff’s office spokesman Derreck Booth said.

The sheriff’s office began looking into You after receiving a fraud report from a friend of the victim Feb. 5.  An investigation revealed You befriended the victim, a woman from Hoschton, “several years ago and gained access to her bank account,” Booth said.

Investigators said between January 2016 and March 2020, You used more than $70,000 of the woman’s funds.

You was taken to the Hall County Jail, where he remains on a charge of exploitation of an elder person.

The investigation is ongoing.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
