Two people were killed Sunday afternoon in a fiery crash near Marietta, Cobb County police said.

About 4:10 p.m., a black 2006 Ford Fusion driven by Ryan Michalski crashed into a white 2013 Kia Optima driven by Miraylla Sousa, Cobb County police Officer Sarah O’Hara said. Both cars were traveling on Powers Ferry Road and approaching Meadowbrook Lane before the crash.

“Witnesses stated that the Ford was travelling well above the speed limit and had been passing other vehicles in the center turn lane,” O’Hara said in a statement. “The Ford entered the southbound lane into the path of the Kia and the two vehicles collided, causing them both to rotate.”

The Ford caught fire and had extensive damage when it came to a stop on the shoulder, O’Hara said. The Kia stopped in the intersection.

Michalski, 31, and Sousa, 23, both of Marietta, were taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call Cobb County police at 770-499-3987.
