A Newton County murder suspect accused of running over a developmentally disabled man after a dispute at a Fourth of July gathering was arrested Tuesday in upstate New York, authorities said.

Joshua Anderson, 27, was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Office after a five-day search, Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses broke up the scuffle, but as Marshall walked home, Anderson allegedly got into his Toyota pickup truck, sped down the road and struck Marshall before leaving the scene.

At the news conference, Brown called it a “horrendous act” and said he would see to it that Anderson is brought to justice.

“He wasn't doing anything. He wasn't doing nothing,” Robbie Marshall, Kevin’s mother, previously told Channel 2 Action News. “He was such a sweet boy. He wouldn't harm nobody ... This man got in his truck and he ran over my son and he killed him.”

Anderson’s truck was later discovered in a wooded area at his home, but the 27-year-old was nowhere to be found. On Saturday, Anderson’s girlfriend, Kendra Browning, was reported missing by her family, authorities said.

Browning was discovered in New York at the time of Anderson’s arrest, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Deputies said she likely left with Anderson willingly, but it’s unclear whether she knew he was wanted on a murder charge after the hit-and-run. It’s also unclear if she played a role in his escape or whether she will face charges.

Brown did not answer specific questions about the case or Anderson’s arrest at the news conference, but he said Anderson would be extradited to Newton County to face charges of malice murder, aggravated assault and leaving the scene of a crash.

Robbie Marshall, who is planning a funeral for her son, said Kevin would be remembered for his selfless acts, radiant smile and warm spirit.
