A search is underway for a gunman who ambushed a police officer early Monday at a DeKalb County apartment complex, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The officer was called just after midnight to investigate a domestic dispute at the Wesley Club Apartments off Wesley Chapel Road. A woman met him outside the 600 building. When the officer went inside the apartment to speak with a man involved, the man started shooting, Channel 2 reported.

The officer was not injured, DeKalb police Maj. D.L Jordan told the news station. Jordan called the incident very disturbing and “clearly avoidable.”

“This male definitely tried to kill one of our officers,” he said from the scene. “This officer is very fortunate and we just thank God, with his experience and God watching him, this (officer) was able to go home tonight. We’re all very fortunate of that.”

Following the shooting, police set up a perimeter at the apartment complex and called in police dogs and aerial support units, he said. The search continued for the alleged shooter Monday morning.

Police have not released the man’s name or his description, Channel 2 reported.
