A man was arrested Wednesday morning on a malice murder charge, hours after police say he shot a man multiple times in Athens convenience store and killed him.

About 11:04 p.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to a report of gunshots at Perry’s Convenience Store in the 1100 block of Cedar Shoals Drive, Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Geoffrey Gilland said.

At that location, authorities found David Cooper, 24, of Athens, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to police.

Investigators learned Cooper was shot following a dispute with Randy Levrette, 26, of Athens.

“As Levrette was sitting in a car at this location, he was approached by Cooper and another individual,” Gilland said. “An altercation occurred and Levrette shot Cooper multiple times.”

Police captured Levrette without incident about 3:50 a.m. Wednesday at the Parkview Homes Apartments.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Detective Paul Johnson at 706-613-3330, ext. 522 or Paul.Johnson@accgov.com
