An Atlanta police officer fired shots after nearly being hit by a fleeing vehicle Friday night, according to police.

While the officer was not injured, it is unknown if the driver was hit by the gunfire. Police canvassed the area of Sawtell Avenue and McDonough Boulevard for the suspect and the vehicle.

As of early Saturday morning, the suspect was not in custody, Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer Tasheena Brown told AJC.com.

It all started around 9:40 p.m. with an attempted traffic stop in south Atlanta. The vehicle reportedly took off toward Lakewood Avenue but was quickly stopped by a passing train, Brown said.

“The driver then placed the vehicle into reverse and while attempting to turn the vehicle around, he struck a light pole,” she said in a statement. “He then continued driving, almost striking an officer.”

That officer fired toward the vehicle before it sped off again.

Police have not disclosed the reason for the traffic stop. The names of the driver and the officer were not released.
