Human bones that could be up to 50 years old were found in an East Point backyard, police said.

A man dug up a skull Friday on Elsinore Street, East Point police Capt. Cliff Chandler told Channel 2 Action News.

Detectives digging in the area recovered a torso and feet of an “elderly female,” Chandler said.

“We are basically backtracking everyone who may have been at this residence to establish if they are still alive,” Chandler told Channel 2.

The medical examiner said the bones could be anywhere from five to 50 years old, but police believe the woman was buried in a shallow grave within the past decade.

The next steps involve determining an approximate age, race, height and weight and then comparing the information to missing persons cases.

Police told Channel 2 they are investigating the bones as a suspicious death without calling it a homicide, but that doesn’t mean a crime wasn’t committed.
