An instructor at a Gwinnett County middle school has been charged with sexual assault and sexual battery of a student.
James Everette Buckland, who worked as a Junior Leadership Corps instructor at Summerour Middle School in Norcross, was arrested Wednesday by Gwinnett County police, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Buckland was being held on $5,000 bond in the Gwinnett County jail.
The arrest warrant obtained by Channel 2 states: “Accused did make physical contact of a sexual nature while he was employed as a school teacher and the victim was a student on school grounds during school hours.”
The incident occurred on Sept. 15, according to the report.
Gwinnett County schools had not responded to a request from the station for comment as of Wednesday night.
According to a Gwinnett County Public Schools website for the program at Summerour, the Junior Leadership Corps is a two-year course for middle school students that “grew out of a joint vision between the U.S. Army and the National Association of State Boards of Education.”
It states that the mission of the program “is to influence students to be motivated to achieve their academic goals and to be successful, productive leaders who make a difference in their communities.”
