A man and his mother were arrested overnight after a SWAT standoff at a residence, Gwinnett County police said.

Police responded about 6:15 p.m. to the 3900 block of Maple Wood Trail in Buford after a man was reported shooting a handgun into the air outside his residence, spokesman J.D. Albright said.

A 30-year-old man, Peter Scrocca, and his mother, Arlene Scrocca, 60, were inside, according to family members who had left the house during the incident.

Police called in SWAT officers after Peter Scrocca wouldn’t surrender, Rundles said. Officers learned that his mother was in the house willingly and was not thought to be in danger.

His mother walked outside the residence about 10:45 p.m. and was removed from the situation, according to police. She will be charged with obstruction of an officer.

Just before midnight, Peter Scrocca surrendered.

“Multiple warrants have been obtained for Peter Scrocca stemming from the initial unlawful discharge of his firearm,” Albright said.

It’s not clear why Peter Scrocca initially fired the gun.
