A 35-year-old Norcross man will spend the next 15 years in prison after getting convicted of child molestation, prosecutors said Friday.

Fermin Antonio Gomez-Cisneros faced even more jail time, but he was acquitted on two counts of raping the girl, the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

Gomez-Cisneros was arrested in April 2017 after the then-13-year-old told her mother he sexually assaulted her two years earlier, prosecutors said.

The teen disclosed the abuse during a conversation about the dangers of sexually transmitted infections, the release said.

“During the conversation, the victim became incredibly scared and begged her mother to take her to the doctor immediately,” prosecutors said. “When the victim’s mother insisted on knowing why she needed to go to the doctor, the victim broke down and told her ...”

The girl’s mother immediately called police, who launched an investigation. Authorities learned the abuse occurred on multiple occasions while Gomez-Cisneros took care of the child as her mother worked.

“On several occasions while the defendant was caring for the victim, he would trap her in his bedroom and barricade the door so that she could not leave,” prosecutors said.

Gomez-Cisneros denied the allegations during an interview with Gwinnett police.

After deliberating a day and a half, jurors convicted him of child molestation, but returned a not guilty verdict on the two counts of rape.

Gomez-Cisneros was sentenced to 20 years, with the first 15 to serve in prison. He’s also required to register as a sex offender when he is released.
