One day after police announced they were searching for a hit-and-suspect who seriously injured a motorcyclist in Gwinnett County, the driver who fled the scene turned himself in, authorities said.

Christopher Johnson, 32, contacted Gwinnett police on Friday and told them he was the driver of the Ford Mustang at the center of their investigation, police spokesman Cpl. Michele Pihera said in a news release.

The crash occurred about 6:45 a.m. June 10 at the intersection of Duluth Highway and Sugarloaf Parkway, authorities said.

Johnson is accused of striking the Kawasaki motorcycle while making a right turn onto Sugarloaf Parkway. The biker, 30-year-old Kelby Smith, was pushed across several lanes and was partially ejected from the motorcycle, according to a Gwinnett police incident report.

Investigators released a description of Johnson’s Mustang on Thursday morning and asked the public for help locating the hit-and-run suspect.

The Lawrenceville man is charged with hit-and-run resulting in serious injury, failure to report an accident, driving without insurance and driving with a suspended registration. He was released after posting a $6,850 bond, Gwinnett jail records show.
