A handgun was found inside a child’s book bag at a Cobb County preschool Wednesday, police said.
The Center for Early Education at the First Baptist Church contacted Marietta police after a teacher discovered the firearm. The firearm was loaded, Channel 2 Action News reported.
"At this moment, nobody has been charged. We're trying to figure out how this happened," Marietta police Officer Chuck McPhilamy told Channel 2.
No one was injured, and police said all initial indications point to the child being unaware the gun was inside the bag.
A parent told the news station that all students have the same bag, which is used solely for bringing their things to school.
In a letter to parents from the preschool that Channel 2 acquired, the school director wrote:
"The CEE teacher immediately brought the tote bag to the CEE office to report the incident. The tote bag and contents were removed from the preschool and taken to an area away from any children."
Marietta police are investigating along with the Division of Family and Children Services.
