Gwinnett fire investigators are looking for a group of teens suspected of setting some minor arson.
The teens were in the vicinity of four grass fires Tuesday evening that were set near two apartment complexes on Sweetwater Road near Lawrenceville, said Capt. Tommy Rutledge, spokesman for the fire department.
“The fires were not so large in size that they posed an immediate threat to those apartment complexes,” Rutledge said. “Luckily the wind was not up and there was enough moister that those fires did not get going.
Firefighters got the first call at 6:30 p.m. about a single fire across the road from the Prescott Apartments. It was quickly extinguished. A second fire truck was dispatched within the hour when three other fires popped up in the wood line between the Prescott and Cascade apartments, Rutledge said. The fires were easily extinguished.
Witnesses reported seeing three or four older teens in the vicinity of the fires who were gone when firefighters arrived. Investigators want to talk to the teens to determine if they were witnesses or arsonists, Rutledge said.
“We believe those fires were individually set,” Rutledge said.
