A southeast Georgia police officer was arrested after officials accused him of physically abusing two children.

Steven Alan Fitton, 35, of Hinesville, allegedly abused his biological child and a stepchild from a previous marriage, officials said in a news release Wednesday. The Hinesville police officer was taken into custody Nov. 4 after an investigation, the release said.

The injuries to the children were not released.

Fitton was booked into the Liberty County jail, where he was charged with two counts of aggravated assault by strangulation and two counts of second-degree cruelty to children. He was previously released on bond, officials said.

He was placed on administrative leave without pay pending an internal affairs investigation.
