A Georgia father convicted of second-degree murder after his twin toddlers died in a hot car has been sentenced to 20 years, according to the Coweta Judicial Circuit district attorney.

Asa North will serve 10 of those years in prison and 10 on probation for the death of the two 15-month-old girls. Ariel and Alaynah died after being left in North's SUV outside the family's home on Tillman Drive in Carrollton in 2016.

AJC.com previously reported that when officers arrived at the home, people motioned them to head toward the back of an apartment complex where they noticed residents holding two unresponsive girls in a pool, trying to revive them. The twins were rushed to Tanner Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.

North admitted he had been drinking when he left the twins in the vehicle. That night, he was arrested and charged with two felony counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of reckless conduct, both misdemeanors.

The district attorney later upgraded North’s charges to second-degree murder for a crime involving the death of a child due to negligence.
