A recent Georgia Lottery winner was found unresponsive in a Cumming road this week.

Passers-by found Charles Barrett, 59, in Ga. 9 near Cumming Square on Saturday, police Chief Casey Tatum said. They moved his body to a nearby parking lot by the time police arrived, Tatum told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Barrett died Wednesday at Northside Hospital Forsyth after he was removed from life support.

Barrett won $17,000 on a lottery scratch-off ticket approximately a week ago, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The victim’s family members told police that his bank cards had been used since the incident. Tatum told The AJC that his department has subpoenaed bank records to confirm this.

Tatum did not classify Barrett’s death as a homicide and called the case an “unattended death” investigation.

“We’ll try to retrace (Barrett’s) steps,” the chief said.

Chris Gudaitis, an off-duty paramedic, was one of the people who found Barrett, Channel 2 reported. Gudaitis said it was hard to tell if Barrett’s injuries came from being hit by a car or being attacked by someone.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office was asked to help in the investigation, Deputy Doug Rainwater said.
