A man wanted on a charge of kidnapping was arrested in Newton County when a police dog sniffed out his hiding place in a drainage tube in the woods.
Sheriff’s deputies had been searching for Victor Casper, 28, of Covington, for several weeks when they got a tip Jan. 9 that he was hiding out at a property on Helen Road outside Covington.
“When units knocked on the door to the residence, Mr. Casper ran out the back door in an attempt to evade arrest,” Newton sheriff’s Investigator Jeff Alexander said in a news release.
The K-9, Zorro, his handler and other deputies tracked Casper through a “tightly wooded area” to a creek, where he was found crouching in a drainage tube, Alexander said.
Casper was arrested without incident.
“Without the considerable training and skill of the K-9 and his handler this incident could have had a different outcome,” Alexander said.
Details about the alleged kidnapping have not been released. In addition to the kidnapping charge, Casper faces charges of aggravated battery, criminal damage to property and a probation violation. He is being held in the Newton County Detention Center.
