The Monroe County Sheriff's Office asked the GBI to investigate a fatal deputy-involved shooting Monday.

The GBI is investigating a deadly deputy-involved shooting in Monroe County.

Ida Christy Stiles, 42, called 911 and asked for Monroe County deputies to come to her home in the 100 block of Martha Lane around 10:45 a.m., the GBI said in a news release.

Once deputies arrived, Stiles wouldn’t open the door, the release said. They eventually entered her home and were confronted by Stiles allegedly holding a pistol.

Three deputies fired their weapons, killing her, the release said. No deputies were injured during the incident.

It was discovered afterward that the pistol she held up was a CO2 pellet gun in the style of a .357 revolver.

Her body will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy, the release said. No other details have been released.

Monroe County’s seat is Forsyth, which is about 25 miles northwest of Macon and about 65 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.

Officer-involved shootings in Georgia this year are on track to pass the 97 recorded in 2017, according to the GBI. This is the 77th such investigation the agency has opened in 2018.
