A nursing assistant faces aggravated battery charges after officials say he intentionally broke the leg of a 98-year-old woman, who later died during surgery.

Hakim Ogunkunle, 43, was arrested Thursday after an investigation revealed he broke Edna Warren’s leg at Newnan Health and Rehabilitation, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said. Ogunkunle was a certified nursing assistant at the center.

“Warren was taken to Piedmont Newnan Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery but died during the procedure,” Miles said.

Ogunkunle was taken to the Coweta County jail. He also faces a exploitation and intimidation of an elderly person charge.

No other details were released.
