A deputy is recovering from multiple stab wounds after an encounter with an armed man at an Augusta hotel Thursday night.

Richmond County sheriff’s deputy Stephan Psillos shot and killed his alleged attacker, identified by the GBI as 25-year-old Jack Darrel Fields Jr. of El Paso, Texas.

The road patrol deputy was called about 8:10 p.m. Thursday to help with a difficult person at the Residence Inn on Marks Church Road in Augusta, according to the GBI. He met Fields in the lobby of the hotel.

“During the encounter, Deputy Psillos attempted to place handcuffs on Fields, at which time Fields resisted arrest,” a spokesman for Agent Patrick Morgan said in a news release. “Fields pulled a knife from his coat pocket and attacked Deputy Psillos, stabbing him multiple times. Deputy Psillos fired his service weapon, striking Fields.”

Psillos, who has served with the sheriff’s office since July 2017, was taken to Augusta University Medical Center for treatment.

Other deputies tried to perform first aid on Fields, but they were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The GBI was scheduled to perform an autopsy Friday.

The agency is investigating the officer-involved shooting at the request of the sheriff’s office, which is standard protocol in such cases.
