Fulton County sheriff deputies are mourning the loss of one of their own: K-9 Deputy Marco Henry.

Marco, a Belgium Malinois, was euthanized Wednesday after a veterinarian discovered he had inoperable cancer, according to the sheriff’s office. The 6-year-old dog was designated as an “All Patrol” canine and was partnered with Sgt. Corey Henry, who commands the sheriff’s K-9 unit. They had worked side-by-side for five years.

Marco immigrated from Germany and was trained to sniff out illegal drugs and track suspects. He was popular with community organizations and reputedly was adept at public-relations tours in schools.

The sheriff’s office plans a photo gallery of Marco on its Facebook page,

The sheriff has two other K-9 units, which are trained in explosive detection in the bomb unit.
