The family of a man killed on Valentine’s Day when a car crashed into a Sandy Springs car wash has reached a $1.25 million settlement with insurers, according to a published report.

“The enormity of this loss for the family is unfathomable,” Atlanta lawyer Terrence Bethune, who represented the mother and siblings of Malcolm Callender II in the suit, told the Daily Report. “There can be no greater tragedy than for a parent to have to bury a child.”

Wilfredo Santo-Serrano, 22, lost control of his vehicle Feb. 14 while fleeing Mikael's Auto Spa on Roswell Road in a customer's vehicle, according to police. Santo-Serrano slammed into the side of the building, striking Callender, who was inside the car wash, police said.

Callender was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police arrested Santo-Serrano the next day at a nearby apartment. Police charged he with felony hit-and-run and first-degree vehicular homicide.

Santo-Serrano, 22, is free on a $25,000 bond.
