Family members accused of beating, stabbing middle school student at bus stop

The search is on for three people — a student, his mother and his sister — police say beat and stabbed a middle schooler at a bus stop Friday morning.

The victim and another student were involved in the altercation in the 3300 block of Mt. Gilead Road near Meadowlane Drive in southwest Atlanta, according to a letter sent to parents.

The students were boarding bus No. 681, which was headed to Bunche Middle School, when an argument broke out.

Police say that one of the students’ mother, Tayza Danielle Harris, 44, and his sister, Chelsea Monicque Harris, 24, both of Atlanta, began arguing with the other student.

“They kept getting in his face,” Atlanta Public Schools police Officer J. Kozma wrote in his report, which was obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“The students (at the bus stop said) the older sister swung on the (victim) but missed as he was trying to get on the bus.”

The victim then turned around and threw his bookbag at Chelsea Harris and the two adults began to attack him, according to the police report. Police said one of the women stabbed the victim with a knife.

By the time police arrived, the boy was bleeding from the top of his head and right hand. He also had a cut on his right ear.

The boy was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding, where he received stitches. School officials did not release the name of the victim or his fellow student.

In a letter, Bunche Middle School principal Mario Watkins told parents the school’s focus was on the students’ well-being and safety.

No other students at the bus stop or on the bus were injured.

Tayza Harris’ past arrests date to 2006 in Fulton County and include cruelty to children, battery, aggravated assault and gang charges. She is described as 5-foot-7 and weighs 172 pounds.

Chelsea Harris was arrested in 2012 on third-degree forgery charges. She is described as 5-foot-3 and weighs 165 pounds.
