Escapee from 2002 located in Cobb, then set free
A man who escaped a prison work detail 14 years ago was released from jail Wednesday without having to post a cash or property bond.
The Dalton Daily Citizen reported that Charles Perry Armstrong escaped a prison detail in Whitfield County in 2002. He was taken into custody Monday after receiving a speeding ticket in Cobb County, where officials found the old warrant for the escape and sent Armstrong back to Dalton.
But Armstrong was subsequently released on an OR bond, meaning on his own recognizance, according to an official with Magistrate Court. District Attorney Bert Poston said the statute of limitations on the escape charge had expired, leading to the dismissal of the case.
Armstrong was serving a sentence for drug-related charges when he escaped. He later served prison time for other offenses before being released in 2007.
