A Savannah man faces a felony charge of driving under the influence in connection with the crash that killed a popular morning anchor.
Cleveland Antwan Coleman, 31, was arrested Tuesday, after being released from Memorial University Medical Center, the Savannah Morning News reported.
Coleman appeared in court Wednesday, where he tried to fight extradition to South Carolina, which means he will be held in Chatham County jail until a governor’s warrant can be obtained and a Superior Court hearing set.
The fatal head-on collision happened about 4 a.m. Sunday, on the South Carolina side of the Talmadge Bridge on U.S. 17.
Don Logana, who was a passenger in the back seat of a 2009 Mitsubishi Gallant, was not wearing a seatbelt and was killed instantly, South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Matt Southern told the newspaper.
Driver Eric Richter and two other passengers, Carlina Richter of Register and Joshua Bridges were all hospitalized.
Updates on their conditions were not immediately known.
Logana had worked at WTOC for more than a decade and started anchoring the morning news with Cyreia Sandlin after Mike Manhatton lost his battle with cancer in 2014.
“We have so many memories together outside of work,” Sandlin said. “He is an icon in this city. Our newsroom will never be the same. I will never be the same.”
