A former North Georgia deputy and probation officer was arrested Tuesday on three child molestation charges in Pickens County, authorities said.

Gaylon Earl Mathews, 57, of Jasper, was booked into the county’s jail on two counts of aggravated child molestation and one count of child molestation, according to jail records.

The GBI obtained the warrants for Mathews’ arrest, which accuse him of molesting a child younger than 16 years old. The incidents took place between November and December in 2014 and between March 15 and April 15 in 2015, according to the warrants.

Mathews has worked on and off for the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office since the 1980s, according to Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) records. His last stint with the sheriff’s office was between 2007 and 2009. His most recent law enforcement job was as a probation officer from November 2017 until May 2018.

His certification is suspended for “failure to maintain the training standards,” according to POST records.
