DeKalb County police played a small part in getting Clayton County shooting suspect Antwan Latrell Thomas to turn himself in to Clayton County police after allegedly shooting a co-worker.
Maj. K.D. Johnson with DeKalb police told Channel 2 Action News he knew Thomas’ family and got a call from them Sunday night. Thomas’ family told Johnson he wanted to turn himself in, but was afraid.
“The thing that we face today is that people do not trust law enforcement because of things that they see and hear, so this is an opportunity,” Johnson told the news station.
Thomas was on the run for a week until he turned himself in Monday. He was charged with murder in the shooting death of his coworker, Travis Castile, 48, at XPO Logistics.
Police said the two were arguing over who was in charge when Thomas pulled a gun on Castile and shot him. Thomas drove away before police arrived.
Thomas’ family brought him to the DeKalb precinct. Clayton County police later came and took him into custody.
“This is the way we should do things,” Johnson told Channel 2, “just turn yourself in to any police officer if someone is wanted, but we’ve got to be trusted and that was a good step toward that.”
Johnson told Channel 2 Thomas’s family was on edge for days.
“Our goal is to get other families to understand that you can trust the police,” Johnson said. “We’re not all bad.”
