The DeKalb County police officer wounded during a weekend shootout with a suspect remained hospitalized Tuesday but was progressing in his recovery, officials said.

Officer Chester Lamb was shot five times Sunday morning after he confronted a suspect at the Marquis Pointe apartments in Stone Mountain. The suspect was killed in the shootout, and Lamb was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in “stable but serious” condition.

DeKalb police spokesman Capt. S.R. Fore said Tuesday that Lamb remained in the hospital but had begun physical therapy.

“… How well that goes will determine how soon he may be released,” Fore said.

Police originally responded to the apartment complex on Stone Mill Cove around 2 a.m. Sunday after several 911 callers reported a man shooting into their building. The suspect was not found at that time, but Lamb and a fellow officer returned at about 3:20 a.m. after another 911 caller said that “the shooter was back and banging on her door,” authorities said.

The suspect, identified as Frederick Farmer, reportedly shot at the officers before Lamb returned fire, killing him.
