Two people are in jail after they tried to sell methamphetamine to Dawson County deputies and led law enforcement officers on a chase, authorities said.

Louis Chris Montalvo, 37, and Evelyn Nicole Witherow, 33, both of Cumming, each face methamphetamine trafficking charges in connection with the incident, the Dawson sheriff’s office confirmed to AJC.com.

Dawson investigators were conducting a “controlled purchase of methamphetamine” from the duo April 21, the sheriff’s office said. When deputies tried to arrest them, Witherow and Montalvo drove away.

A Georgia State Patrol trooper, who was helping in the operation, chased the vehicle northbound onto Ga. 400 and then eastbound onto Ga. 53, officials said. The trooper performed a PIT maneuver to disable the vehicle, and the car stopped in a restaurant parking lot.

Montalvo got out of the vehicle and tried to run away but was caught by a deputy. Witherow was arrested in the parking lot, the Dawson sheriff’s office said.

When investigators searched the suspects’ car, they found 35 grams of methamphetamine and a digital scale, authorities said.

Both Montalvo and Witherow were taken to the Dawson County Detention Center, where they remain with no bond.

In addition to methamphetamine trafficking, Montalvo is charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and obstruction of an officer. Witherow faces charges of use of communication facility in committing or facilitating a felony, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, driving under the influence, reckless driving, improper lane change, no proof of insurance and several other traffic offenses.
