A Cobb County judge Friday let murder charges without bond stand against two people in connection with a deadly shooting over a Craigslist shoe deal, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Vincent Diandrez Brooks, 22, of Jonesboro, is charged along with Damien Akeen Scott, 22, of Decatur, in the May shooting in a Carrabba’s parking lot near Cumberland Mall.
“The charges does not indicate the person that he is,” Kaneitra Johnson, Brooks’ mother, said during the hearing. She had sought to have her son let out on bond.
Prosecutors said Brooks thought he was driving Scott to a job, but he ended up helping Scott get away from the shooting, Channel 2 reported.
Mezaio Pickett, the victim, had agreed to a deal with Scott to buy two pair of shoes for $350, Channel 2 reported. But at the meeting, the deal changed.
“Mr. Pickett actually wanted to buy the shoes the seller was wearing and literally bought the shoes off his feet,” Smyrna detective Andrew Grubb testified.
Two of Pickett’s friends in the car with him said Scott didn't like the deal, according to testimony.
“They exchanged money, gave him the $350, they shook on it and as Mr. Pickett was walking back to the car, the seller said ‘nah,’ walked back, reached through the driver’s window and shot Mr. Pickett one time in the back,” Grubb testified.
Scott fired five more times, then jumped in Brooks’ car and they drove off, according to the Channel 2 report.
Prosecutors told the judge that under Georgia law, getaway drivers can be held equally responsible as the gunman for a murder, the station reported.
