A former Coweta County jailer was arrested after investigators discovered he had sexual contact with an inmate, the GBI said.

Cody Martin, 25, was taken into custody Monday on one count of sexual assault against a person in custody, authorities said.

The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into Martin after several inmates approached the jail’s staff and told them he was having sexual relations with a female inmate, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.

The case was turned over to the GBI after the initial investigation by the sheriff’s office supported the inmates’ claims, she said. Warrants were issued for Martin’s arrest and he was booked into the Fayette County Jail.

Martin joined the sheriff’s office in January, authorities said.

As of Wednesday evening, Martin did not appear in online jail records for Fayette or Coweta counties, and it wasn’t immediately clear if he was still in custody.

The GBI said its investigation is ongoing.

Donald Trump's administration deployed the military to Washington, D.C., in the name of fighting crime, and in an Aug. 11 news conference he mentioned the possibility of military being sent to other large American cities, all of which are led by Black, Democratic mayors. And while Atlanta wasn't included in Trump's list, the city fits that profile under Mayor Andre Dickens. (Photo Illustration: Philip Robibero / AJC | Source: Getty)
