A Cherokee County couple is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after authorities removed 129 cats from their home over the weekend, authorities said Tuesday.

Also, the state Division of Family and Children Services removed the couple’s teen daughter from the residence because of the poor living conditions found inside the home, Cherokee marshal’s spokesman Matthew McMullen said.

Patrick and Megan Kuykendall’s East Cherokee Drive home was “filled with urine and feces throughout,” McMullen said.

Officers initially went to the home Friday night, but responding officers couldn’t get anyone to answer the door, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported. Officers went again Saturday, and when the homeowners answered, officers were overcome by the smell and called for assistance.

The homeowners cooperated with officers and surrendered the animals, marshals spokesman Maj. Karen Johnson said Saturday. Two dogs also were found in the residence. Animal control officers were involved in removing the animals.

Patrick and Megan Kuykendall were arrested Monday on 129 counts of cruelty to animals and and one count of second degree cruelty to children, McMullen said. The latter charge is a felony. The couple is being held at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center in lieu of $151,200 bond.
