A Villa Rica mother is accused of shoplifting before leading police on a wrong-way chase — while her 8-year-old was in the backseat.
Medley Danetra Imani, 28, faces eight charges after the Friday incident, which began when she allegedly shoplifted from a Belk store on Dallas Highway in Cobb County, Channel 2 Action News reported.
An employee called 911 after another worker said she saw Imani stealing clothes worth more than $2,300, Channel 2 reported. Cobb police officers arrived and tried to stop her in the store’s parking lot.
However, Imani drove around the patrol car and led officers on a chase on Dallas Highway, police told the news station. According to an arrest warrant, she “drove on the wrong side” of the road, “made illegal U-turns” and “drove recklessly.”
During the 2-mile chase, her child was in the backseat, Channel 2 reported. She eventually pulled over and turned herself in.
Imani faces three felonies, including theft by shoplifting, attempting to elude police and second-degree child cruelty, in addition to simple battery and four driving-related misdemeanors, according to jail records.
She remains in jail without bond, records show. The Division of Family and Children Services was called in to assist with the child.
