When authorities walked into a Rome house over the weekend, they said they found a toilet filled with dead roaches, spoiled milk spilled all over the floor and the overpowering stench of urine and feces.
Inside the house were three children, whose mother had left them home with their grandmother, authorities said.
A Rome police officer said the mother, 27-year-old Kansas Latrail Grace, is “not a responsible adult” and charged her with multiple felonies, according to an arrest warrant obtained by AJC.com. Grace was arrested Sunday on three counts of first-degree child cruelty and a count of disorderly conduct.
About 9:30 a.m., officers went to Grace’s home off Church Street and discovered the deplorable living conditions, the warrant said. In addition to the aforementioned filth, officers said they saw flies and a bathtub filled with multicolored mold.
Authorities checked out the home due to an abandoned blue Jeep that was parked in the road nearby, according to a police incident report.
The vehicle, which contained Grace’s information, reeked from old food, dirty diapers and soiled clothing. As a result, police went to Grace’s home, where they found a similar sight, according to the report.
The children, whose ages were not released, did not have any clean clothes, the officers said.
Grace’s charges are felonies since she allegedly “deprived her three children the necessary sustenance to the extent the child’s health or well-being is jeopardized,” the warrant said.
When Grace returned to the home, she’s accused of calling the kids’ grandmother an expletive in front of them, leading to the disorderly conduct charge, the warrant said.
Grace was booked into the Floyd County jail, according to the sheriff’s office. Information on her bond was not immediately available.
