A man was arrested after he pretended to help a woman who had been hit by a car and then robbed her, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Corey Newkirk was arrested Friday shortly after he left a Walmart in alleged accomplice Toria Fuller’s car, Conyers police Sgt. Buck Vaughn told Channel 2.

The 49-year-old unidentified woman was pushing her shopping cart after leaving the store when a car backed into it and knocked her to the ground.

“Several bystanders went to help her pick up her belongings,” Vaughn said. “One of those took advantage of the situation and collected not only her driver's license, but a couple of credit cards and cash.”

Witnesses identified the suspect as Newkirk, who by then had hopped in Fuller’s car. They were arrested on I-20, but police did not specify where on the interstate.

Newkirk is charged with theft by taking and Fuller was charged with obstruction, Channel 2 reported.
