A Carrollton man killed his brother-in-law Thursday night after a fight at an apartment complex, police said.

The man was arrested Friday.

Melvin Cordero Barkley had been on the run since Thursday night, Carrollton police Deputy Chief Chris Dobbs said. He was believed to have had a knife and gun on him.

Barkley was arrested at a relative’s home, Chanel 2 Action News reported.

Dobbs said police were initially called about a fight at an apartment complex on Northwinds Boulevard, but when they arrived they did not see anyone.

“Up the road, they find a truck running with the victim deceased in (it),” he said.

The victim, identified as 23-year-old Tyler Waters, had neck wounds.

It is not known why the men were fighting, but it was likely due to a “family issue,” police said.

Authorities are awaiting results of the autopsy before releasing a cause of death.

Barkley was twice in prison on charges out of Carroll and Haralson counties, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. He served 18 months for a 2012 conviction for aggravated assault, terroristic threats and acts, and criminal trespassing.

Three years later, Barkley was convicted of two counts each of theft by taking and second-degree burglary in Carroll County and theft by deception and theft by receiving stolen property in Haralson County, according to the Georgia DOC. He served 13 months.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
