Gainesville police are searching for a man accused of shooting a 19-year-old Monday evening.

Luis Angel Sierra-Alegria, 22, of Gainesville, is wanted on aggravated assault and aggravated battery charges in the shooting that sent Alex Chavez to a hospital, police said in a Facebook post.

The shooting took place after an argument between two groups behind Haverty’s Furniture, police said. It’s unclear what the groups were arguing about or why they were near the store, which is temporarily closed.

About 8 p.m., the dispute escalated to the point where Sierra-Alegria shot Chavez in the torso, police said. Someone drove the injured man to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he is stable.

Anyone with information on Sierra-Alegria is asked to call 911.
