A Barrow County man has been charged with murder after allegedly killing a man accused of stealing from his property, authorities said.

Barrow County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Ryan Sears identified Winder resident Bradon Lay as the man found shot to death in his car Saturday evening near a Winder intersection. Authorities believe Lay was “caught allegedly stealing items” from property owned by Paul Hamilton, who allegedly tracked Lay down several hours later and killed him.

“Hamilton initiated a confrontation with Lay at the intersection of Old Hog Mountain Road and Charlie Hall Road and that is when the shooting occurred,” Sears said in an email.

Specific information about what was allegedly stolen and the proximity of Hamilton’s property to the site of the shooting were were not provided.

Hamilton was being held at the Barrow County Detention Center, Sears said.

The investigation is ongoing.
