A 30-year-old man who has already spent most of his adult life in state prison is now accused of shooting another man to death, according to police.

Kendrick Monquell Cheeves surrendered Sunday afternoon and was booked into the Spalding County jail, Sheriff Wendell Beam said Monday. Cheeves was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault for allegedly shooting to death Quinton Henderson late Friday, Beam said.

Henderson, 29, was shot and found in the driveway of a residence in the 100 block of Camden Road, near Griffin, shortly after 10 p.m., according to Capt. Tony Ranieri with the Spalding County Sheriff's Office. Henderson was taken to Spalding Regional Hospital, but did not survive.

Cheeves, who lived at the home where Henderson was found, was later identified as the suspect in the death. But he eluded police until Sunday at 2 p.m., when he surrendered, according to police. The motive in the shooting has not been determined, Beam said Monday.

Cheeves has previously served three sentences in state prisons, is a registered sex offender and was on parole at the time of his most recent arrest, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections and the GBI.

Cheeves has been convicted of child molestation, statutory rape, eluding police and drug charges, state records show. He was most recently released in May 2013 after serving since Oct. 2011. Cheeves was also in state prison from February 2003 through January 2004 and again from May 2005 until March 2010, DOC records show.

Cheeves was being held without bond Monday night.
