Julian Malcolm Jones, a freshman football player at the University of Illinois, has been charged with sexual battery in Smyrna, police said.

In a news release sent Saturday, Smyrna police spokesman Louis Defense said officers “took a report of a sexual battery that occurred between two teenage friends” on Oct. 18. The subsequent investigation resulted in Jones, who attended Westlake High School in Fulton County, being charged with simple battery and aggravated sexual battery, a felony.

No further information about the alleged assault was provided.

Jones was charged Wednesday in Illinois and is awaiting extradition to Georgia.

According to media reports, Jones has been suspended indefinitely from the Illinois football team.

“The investigation is still active and there are no further details to report,” Defense said.
