An 87-year-old woman was killed and her husband injured in a car crash Friday while driving to Mississippi to visit family for Christmas, according to a Cobb County church.

Barbara and Gene Vassallo were traveling from their Acworth home when they were involved in a single-vehicle crash near Rockford in Coosa County, Ala., according to media reports. Troopers said the Vassallo's 2018 Chevrolet Equinox left the roadway and struck several trees before overturning, the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reported.

Barbara Vassallo died while being treated at a local hospital. Her husband was treated for a broken shoulder, according to a Mars Hill Presbyterian Church Facebook post.

“Please be in prayer for Gene and also Barbara's family during this time and please know that I will be in prayer for our church family during this time of sadness and shock,” Senior Pastor Bryant Harris posted on Facebook.

The Vassallos were active members in their church, serving in a food pantry, friends posted online.

The crash remains under investigation.

One grieving mother knew about her daughter's car accident before police did, due to the tracking app she installed on her daughter's phone.
