A 15-year-old boy with mental health issues has been charged as an adult in the choking death of his mother, Gwinnett police said Wednesday.

According to police, Patrick Gibson and his mother got into an argument Tuesday at the Oakwood Vista Apartments near Norcross, police Cpl. Deon Washington said.

“Detectives have confirmed that Gibson had mental health issues and had an argument with his mother about refusing to take his medication,” he said.

About 5 p.m., the victim’s nephew returned to the apartment, found the body of 47-year-old Faith Haynes and called 911, police said.

At that point, Gibson ran, Washington said.

Police found him a short time later at the front of the complex in the 1300 block of Ardsley Place and detained him.

Washington said no other victims were inside the home when the dispute happened.

Gibson is being held at the Rockdale Regional Youth Detention Center on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault.
