An 18-year-old was killed Saturday afternoon after being shot several times near a Midtown apartment building, Atlanta police said.

Atlanta police discovered Jalanni Pless of Atlanta with multiple gunshot wounds on 8th Street shortly before 2:30 p.m., Atlanta police spokesman Officer Steve Avery said.

“Witnesses told police that they saw a group walking near Spring Street and Peachtree Place before gunfire broke out,” Avery said in a statement.

The victim ran into a nearby parking garage, where he was found dead.

Two people were detained at the scene but were released shortly after, Avery said.

Atlanta Police Capt. D’Andrea Price told Channel 2 Action News that investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and that the victim may have been with a group of teens selling water.

No other information has been released.

Donald Trump's administration deployed the military to Washington, D.C., in the name of fighting crime, and in an Aug. 11 news conference he mentioned the possibility of military being sent to other large American cities, all of which are led by Black, Democratic mayors. And while Atlanta wasn't included in Trump's list, the city fits that profile under Mayor Andre Dickens. (Photo Illustration: Philip Robibero / AJC | Source: Getty)
