One woman is dead and another is in critical condition following a double shooting Friday evening in southwest Atlanta.

The incident took place about 8:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Fairburn Road, Atlanta police said. The victims, identified Saturday as 35-year-old Shadeeah Melton and 30-year-old Fatima Jefferson, were shot multiple times.

They were taken to a hospital, where Melton later died, police said. Jefferson remains in critical condition.

Investigators believe the women got into an argument with a suspect before being shot. Witnesses told officers they saw a black SUV sped away from the scene after the gunfire, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing and no additional details have been released.
