A barricaded man was found dead Thursday evening in a Gwinnett County home after an 11-hour long SWAT standoff, officials confirmed.

“After several hours of attempted negotiation, members of the SWAT team entered the residence and located the male suspect deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Gwinnett County police Cpl. Wilbert Rundles said.

Authorities are not releasing the man’s name pending notification of next of kin.

About 9 a.m., police were initially called to the area of Williamsburg Drive in Norcross after neighbors reported a man randomly fired shots, Rundles said.

The man, who rents a unit in the basement of the home, went inside and was seen by police, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Occupants in the home and nearby residents were evacuated and the area of Williamsburg Drive was closed, Rundles said.

About 3:30 p.m., police activated their full SWAT team, Channel 2 reported.  Rundles said the team was working to contact the man and “bring this situation to a peaceful end.” Officials also worked to obtain warrants for the home.

By 8 p.m., officials entered the home and found the man dead.

“Officers are working to get the area cleared to allow residents to return to their homes,” Rundles said.

No other injuries have been reported.

Six soldiers were honored, each receiving Meritorious Service Medals, Thursday for heroic actions responding to the shooting at Fort Stewart. “One of the things I can say unequivocally is that the fast action of these soldiers — under stress and under trauma and under fire — absolutely saved lives from being lost,” U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll told reporters as the six soldiers stood near him Thursday. “They are everything that is good about this nation.” (Hyosub Shin/AJC)
