A man fleeing police in DeKalb County got out of his vehicle and was hit and killed by vehicles on I-20 as he tried to run across the interstate Nov. 12, authorities said.
The incident took place a little after 6 p.m., when a DeKalb police pursuit involving a Volkswagen Jetta ended on I-20 East near Candler Road, the Georgia State Patrol said in a news release. The man, who was later identified as 21-year-old Jamal Salaam of Conyers, then allegedly tried to run south across I-20 West, where he was hit by a BMW SUV.
The impact threw the man further into the travel lanes, where he was run over by a Dodge pickup truck, the release said. Authorities attempted to revive him, but he died at the scene.
It’s unclear what led up to the police chase. DeKalb police did not provide more information to AJC.com when asked.
The incident caused all I-20 lanes to be blocked in both directions until nearly 7 p.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. By 8:15 p.m., all lanes had reopened.
